RED MAGIC 6R REVIEW: A TOP OF THE GAMING RANGE UNDER 500 EUROS
The world of gaming smartphones is becoming increasingly competitive. In fact, several models have arrived over the last few years trying to grab the same type of audience. However, contrary to what one might think, within what still represents a niche in Europe (the numbers are very different compared to the Asian market), different price ranges are being created. healthnutritionhints
In general, many are used to think of a gaming device as a
top of the range, also in terms of price, but in the last period there are also
devices that aim to bring the performance of flagships below 500 euros . We
have already reviewed Black Shark 4 on these pages, device that is in fact the
main competitor of the new RedMagic 6R. The latter arrived in Europe at the end
of June 2021 at a starting price of 499 euros on the official portal in an 8 /
128GB configuration: we have put it to the test over the last few weeks.
A gaming smartphone with an essential design
RedMagic 6R is a smartphone that sets aside RGB LEDs and
internal fans, distancing itself from the other devices of the brand. It is
therefore a product that has a very specific underlying philosophy:
remove everything that a part of the user deems superfluous
and aim exclusively at the creation of a cheaper gaming device than usual,
designed for those who want a more sober design and are satisfied with the
experience offered by a classic cooling system. On the other hand, the debate
on internal fans is very heated among users: a reasoning made a bit of a gut
could lead to defining them as not very useful, but in reality those who
usually play for a long time know well that, if well managed, that solution can
make a difference in certain contexts, as we will see later.
In any case, RedMagic 6R cuts on these aspects by reducing
the cost of the ticket and therefore potentially interesting for a certain type
of user.
The absence of LEDs can finally provide a viable solution
for those who do not appreciate the classic gaming look. In the Cosmos Black
variant that we got to try, it doesn't even look like a device designed for
gamers, at least in terms of design. Of course, some more aggressive lines
remain, but it shows itself more in the other Mercury Silver color on the market
in the 12 / 256GB cut.
We are sure that this choice of RedMagic will be appreciated
by a good number of users, but we must say that the Cosmos Black color is not
exactly the most pleasing to the eye, getting lost in the myriad of
"dark" devices on the market. The plastic back could be a bit upset,
but in reality it is a choice that allows you to reduce costs and that does not
create too many headaches. In any case, the constructive solidity is not
lacking, also thanks to the metal frame.
An interesting aspect of RedMagic 6R are the dimensions:
163.04 x 75.34 x 7.8 mm, for a weight of 186.41 grams. Although it is not a
small device, given that the market now requires large screens, the model is
more manageable than many others on the market. This is a not insignificant
strength, especially for those gamers who usually carry out long gaming
sessions with a device of this type in hand.
On the front we find a display with a hole for the camera
placed at the top in the center . The latter is a bit too large for our tastes,
but in reality, after a while, we get used to it. On the back, on the top left,
the camera module peeks out, consisting of four sensors and Dual LED flash. The
conformation is a bit atypical, as it is cut at the bottom right, but in reality,
overall the design is in line with many other products on the market.
The manufacturer tried to distinguish the product by placing
a bright red logo at the bottom and dividing the body into various parts but in
reality, at least in the Cosmos Black color, both the central RedMagic writing
and the lines on the sides almost disappear.in certain contexts. Another aspect
that has not completely convinced us is the protrusion of the photographic
module, since the latter makes the smartphone dance a little when placed on a
flat surface. Unfortunately, there is no waterproofing.
On the right side we find the power button, the volume
rocker and the inevitable soft-touch triggers at 400 Hz , while at the top
there is a microphone. Finally, the speaker, second microphone, USB Type-C 3.1
port with video output and the trolley for the SIM in Dual nanoSIM
configuration peek out at the bottom. As for the unlocking methods, there are
both the classic facial recognition and the fingerprint sensor integrated under
the screen. By now both technologies have reached a certain maturity and in
fact the unlocking speed is average and we have never had any problems.
Moving on to the contents of the package, in addition to the
classic manuals, the smartphone and the pin for extracting the SIM compartment,
we found a convenient transparent cover, a USB Type-C to jack adapter, a USB
Type-C cable / USB Type-A and a 30W fast charger which, however, does not
reaches the height of the competitor Black Shark 4. Summing up, the equipment is
complete and essentially nothing is missing.
RedMagic 6R: a performance "monster"
Although the price is lower than that of other gaming
smartphones, this does not mean that RedMagic 6R does not aim at the top of the
market in terms of performance.
In fact, under the body of the model we tested we find a
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC , as well as 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of
non-expandable UFS 3.1 internal memory. The performances are therefore similar
to those of the 2021 top of the range that we have seen so far. Of course, the
Snapdragon 888 Plus processor was recently announced , but the latter has not
yet been seen in action and RedMagic 6R still places itself at the top of the
market.
If you are looking for confirmation, just take a look at the
benchmarks: 829,162 points on AnTuTu v9, as well as 1125 points in single-core
and 3499 points in multi-core on GeekBench. To be clear, the Black Shark 4,
which has a Snapdragon 870, reaches 600,226 points on AnTuTu. In short, nothing
can be said about RedMagic 6R in terms of performance, it is the most powerful
gaming smartphone under 500 euros on the market .
Alongside all this brute force there is a 4200 mAh battery
that guarantees average autonomy . We have often managed to take home the
classic day, but sometimes the remaining charge is limited to the evening. On
the other hands, it is difficult to reach two days, especially using the
smartphone for gaming.
Precisely due to the facts that it is a device for gamers we
would have preferred the presence of a larger battery, but the latter would
certainly have increased the size and weight of the device, which instead aims
to be manageable. Much depends on the type of use, but what is certain is that
charging at 30W, while not reaching the top of the market, is fast enough to be
able to return to a good residual charge in a short time. On the other hand,
wireless charging is absent.
There are excellent news regarding the multimedia sector.
One of the main criticisms of RedMagic's devices in the past, including the RedMagic
6 we reviewed a few months ago , was the absence of Widevine L1 DRMs , which
are needed to watch content from platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video
in high resolution. Now the brand has finally solved the question, since
RedMagic 6R can play these multimedia contents in FullHD.
This allows you to better appreciate the qualities of the
6.67-inch OLED screen with FullHD + resolution(2400 x 1080 pixels), brightness
peaks of 770 nits, refresh rate of 144 Hz, touch sampling rate of 360 Hz and a hole
for the camera positioned in the top center. Color reproduction and maximum
brightness are good, although not at the top of the market.
Also present is the classic Always On mode, which can be
customized through various themes but is a bit limited for notifications, as
well as an adaptive refresh rate feature. Unfortunately, the mono audio sector
is not very convincing for general quality. However, we are sure that many
users will be able to overcome this flaw, perhaps simply by using good
headphones.
Arriving at the photographic department, RedMagic 6R is a
gaming smartphone and therefore excellent performance is not required.
Contextualizing the product in its reference market, the device defends itself
discreetly above all thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. Of course,
often the colors are distorted compared to the real ones, but we know how much
this effect can actually please those who have no particular photographic
needs. In any case, do not expect anything unthinkable from the quad rear
camera with Sony IMX682 sensor from 64MP (f / 1.8) + 8MP (f / 2.2, ultra-wide)
+ 5MP (f / 2.4, for macros) + 2MP (f /2.4, for bokeh).
In bright contexts the device performs well, but it is when
the light goes down and in other more difficult situations that the final
result leaves something to be desired. The maximum zoom that can be reached
digitally is 10x but it is better to stop much earlier, for photos that can be
used on social media. Too bad for the possibility of shooting wide-angle only
in Pro mode . They also leave the macros to be desired, which have too low a
resolution for our taste. On the average, the 16MP front camera, which takes
selfies that will be satisfactory for a good number of users.
With the rear sensor, videos can even be recorded in 8K, but
we highly recommend going down to Full HD for decent stabilization and general
quality. In short,RedMagic 6R is definitely not a smartphone that you buy to
take photos and videos , but if you have few needs you could still make it
enough. If you want to take a look at some uncompressed photos, you can do so
by going to our Drive folder dedicated to RedMagic 6R .
If there is a sector in which you can not say anything to
the smartphone, that is definitely connectivity. In fact, RedMagic's proposal
has support for 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC . Recall that in this price
range there are manufacturers of gaming devices that have added support to the
latter through software months after launch, while here there is already
everything right away. Additionally, RedMagic 6R essentially supports all of
the latest standards available.
Gaming, gaming and more gaming
So far we have not found any particular critical issues as
offered by RedMagic 6R, if not a design that may not please everyone, a photographic
sector that is not exactly the best and an autonomy that does not scream a
miracle.
The real flaw of the smartphone, however, lies in the
software. There is Android 11 with RedMagic OS 4.0 interface . The commitments
made by the manufacturer in terms of gaming functionality is evident: the Play
area, which can be activated by means of a special quick toggle , now has a
very high number of possibilities. Between statistics, central hub, management
of triggers, setting of external accessories, such as controllers sold
separately, and so on and so forth, in some ways even the most famous brands
have to blush.
So what's the problem? The little care taken in the
translation of the available options (there has been a small improvement
compared to the past, but the Italian is definitely to be revised) and in the
software in general.
If in the first case an aware user can also turn a blind
eye, in the second the unpredictable bugs that can occur could give some
headaches. For example, during our test in some cases the speaker played the
audio of no one knows what content. This is not solved even by restarting the
smartphone: every now and then that short " bzz " is destined to
return. Probably a factory reset could fix everything, but understand that in
some contexts it can be annoying.
In general, the feeling is that of software that could be
worked on better. A shame also because we reiterate that the commitment in
terms of features is there, as you will surely have noticed also from our
reviews of the previous RedMagic devices.
Net of this, another aspect that has not completely
convinced us is the cooling system . The internal fans that the brand has been
using since the days of RedMagic 3 / 3S have been removed and this stands out.
In fact, the heat is felt more than usual on the body following prolonged
gaming sessions and for the first time during a recharge we received a message
about high temperatures from the device.
Of courses, you can still play the game, but devices with an
internal fan can do much better in this respect. Of course, there are
smartphones on the market that manage to keep temperatures under control even
without internal fans, but probably the internal cooling system in those cases
is better managed, although graphite is used here too.
Nonestestante this RedMagic 6R does not disappoint in any
way in terms of performance . We have tried several titles with this device,
from Genshin Impact to COD Mobile, without ever compromising or experiencing
drops in fluidity. To be clear, we finished the entire initial part of the
miHoYo title without problems with this device, considering that it essentially
takes 10 hours of gameplay to unlock the co-op, and we appreciated the
possibility of playing Call of Duty Mobile with details on Very High and FPS on
Max , or with FPS on Ultra and details on Medium.
Among other things, the two titles we have mentioned are
interesting for setting the triggersdorsal, which can be used for quick aiming
and firing or to attack and use abilities on Genshin Impact. The answer is not
bad, although we continue to prefer physical buttons such as those offered, for
example, by the Black Shark 4 since the feedback returned is totally different.
Another title that must be tried on RedMagic 6R is Fortnite , which runs as it
should with Epic presets at 30 FPS. For the rest, to make the most of 144 Hz it
is always better to use classic titles such as Real Racing 3 and the like, in
which you can see all the fluidity offered by the display. In short, on the
performance in terms of videogames, certainly nothing can be said about the
device.
