KOBO ELIPSA REVIEW: THE EBOOK READER WITH STYLUS FOR BIG READERS
How many books do you read a years? This is the first question to ask before buying a Kobo Elipsa. The new Kobo eBook Reader is in fact a product designed for large readers , who grind dozens of pages every day. This is also one of the fews devices of this type equipped with a stylus, it is therefore possible to take notes directly inside the books, a practice that is not widespread but loved by many non-fiction enthusiasts, as well as useful for students.
Given the large offer of eBook Readers available today, it
immediately becomes clear that the Kobo Elipsa is a particular product, a real
top of the range aimed at the most demanding readers, who do not want to
compromise in the reading experience.
Complete with everything
Kobo Elipsa is a well-finished product complete with all
accessories. This, combined with above-average technical specifications, brings
the price to € 399 . A high figure but justified by the high technological
value of Elipsa, which contains all the functions you could want from an eBook
Reader. The sales package offers the pen and a cover of excellent quality
already inside, no other accessories are needed to be able to use Elipsa at its
best.
Once you have picked up the device, the first thing you
notice is its very generous size, especially for those used to traditional
eBook Readers, which usually offer a 6 or 7-inch display. In this case it comes
to a good 10 inches, a dimension that allows superior reading comfort and that
allows you to take advantage of the screen also for reading comics, a very
common method of use on these products.
Despite the large size, the other surprising element is the
weight, of 383 grams, really unexpected and which allows excellent comfort when
reading, also helped by the reduced thickness. The display frames are quite
evident, especially on the right side, but this is not a defect, but more of a
merit, because in this way it is easier to hold. The body is made with a fairly
good quality plastic, a little more perhaps could have been done, perhaps using
a rubberized material on the rear, which would have returned a better tactile
feedback than rigid polycarbonate. All noteworthy elements are in the right
edge, where the power button, status LED and USB Type C charging port are
installed.
The physical keys to turn the page are not present but you
do not miss them, just press on the right side of the screen to do the same
thing in comfort (but you can also set the swipe to perform the same task).
This choice was made to allow reading in every possible condition of the
screen: whether it is positioned vertically or sideways, the software adapts
the text to the selected layout in an instant .
The cover included in the package is really good and is able
to accommodate the stylus inside, moreover its structure allows you to take
advantage of the device in different positions. The upper part of this cover is
also removable, leaving only the rear protective part to protect the body. This
options is handy if you don't want to carry the stylus with you, thus
lightening the overall weight of the Kobo Elipsa when needed.
The last element in the package is the capacitive stylus,
the Kobo Stylus. This pen is powered by a AAAA battery, included in the box,
and is made of metal. On the body there are two buttons, used to highlight text
or to delete any notes, it also fully supports pressure detection, in this way
a more natural and precise writing is obtained.
The only real lack detected is the IP68 certification, so be
careful to bring this eBook Reader to the beach.
The best reading experience available today?
The highlight of the Kobo Elipsa is the size of the screen
and the stylus, for everything else there are practically no differences in the
software options available in the lower models. We are therefore faced with the
classic operating system seen on the other models of the Kobo range. The
interface is very simple but not very fast , as happens in other similar
products, while the books can be purchased directly from the Kobo Store or
loaded manually in different formats. EPUB, EPUB3, FlePub, PDF, MOBI, JPEG,
GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, CBR are supported, so we are faced
with a product that can read practically anything and can import files directly
from Dropbox. At a software level, Dark Mode is interesting, which instead of
showing black text on a white background does exactly the opposite, in this way
the light emission is reduced even more, especially useful for reading in
poorly lit environments. Thanks to the large display reading on the Elipsa is a
real pleasure, compared to the smaller models the visual comfort is higher.
Especially with comics, dimensions make the difference , this eBook Reader is
therefore particularly suitable for this type of use.
Speaking of display and technical specifications, Elipsa is
equipped with a 10.3-inch Carta E-Ink screen, with a resolution of 1404x1872
pixels and Comfort Light technology, which adapts the brightness according to
the environment of use. Unlike the Comfort Light Pro seen in the Kobo Libra H2O
review, however, the color temperature adjustment is missing. The processor
inside is a 1.8 GHz Quad Core and 32 GB of memory is available to save
thousands of books. The availability of AC Dual Band Wi-Fi is interesting,
quite useless for downloading books but essential for managing the web browser,
another function present in the software. Actually navigating on this e-Ink
screen is quite frustrating, which is why a common smartphone or tablet is much
better.
The battery is 2500 mAh but it is really difficult to
estimate its duration, even in an approximate way. It all depends on the
brightness of the screen, whether or not the stylus is used, in short, the
variables are too many to make an accurate estimate. In any case, a full
charge, on average, allows you to use the player for weeks.
The reading experience is therefore excellent and comparable
to that of the other readers in the Kobo range, but with the added possibility
of reading on a larger screen, a shame only for the lack of Comfort Light Pro
technology, which would have allowed you to also adjust the color temperature.
The real difference is made by the stylus supplied, with
which you can write on the clipboard in the software or directly in files with
Kobo ePub, PDF and ePub format. The pen proved to be simple to use and
functional, the stroke is recognized without problems both in the phase of
highlighting the text and in the actual writing. You can therefore take notes
easily, thanks also to a delay in the recognition of the input close to zero .
